[한영 필사노트] 마크테토 "와송"

 

 

태풍의 바람과 비가 그친 뒤, 조심스럽게 집에서 나왔다.

After the typhoon passed, I stepped outside. 

 

태풍 때문에 지붕에 손상이 된 곳은 없는지, 곳곳을 점검하다가 처마의 홈통에 뜬금없이 올라온 작은 식물을 발견했다.

I was inspecting the house here and there – curious whether the harsh weather might have damaged the roof tiles – when I was surprised to see a tiny plant peering out from the gutter. 

 

한옥은 기와밑에 흙이 있어, 가끔 기와 사이사이로 이런 작은 식물들이 올라온다.

 

와송이라고 불리는 이 식물은 행운과 건강을 상징한다.

Called “wasong”, they are symbols of blessing and health.

 

 

“와 얘가 어떻게 태풍을 버텼을까” 라는 생각에 감탄했다.

I marveled that this tiny plant could weather the typhoon unharmed. 

 

사실 비와 바람 등 어려운 환경없이는 행운의 와송이 자라나지 못한다.

And then it occurred to me, that without wind and rain and harh conditions, the “wasong” would never appeared in the first place. 

 

긴 장마비가 끝없이 내려서, 기와 밑의 흙이 흩어지고 흘러내리고 홈통안으로 쌓이게 만든 것이다.

That first there was a difficult monsoon season, whose rain slowly washed the soil out from under the tiles, causing it to trickle into the gutter. 

 

한마디로 침식이며 피해다.

In a word, erosion. 

 

또 어느날의 거센 바람을 타고 하나의 씨앗이 날리고 바람에 두둥실 날아와 이곳으로 내려왔다.

Later on some windy day, a small seed carried by the wind to land in just this spot. 

 

그 어려운 과정을 거쳐 이곳에 씨앗이 앉았고, 태풍의 비와 그 뒤의 맑은 공기와 햇빛으로 이 와송이 자라났다.

Still later the typhoon’s rains and the clear skies the followed causing the small plant to grow. 

 

어려운 환경에도 불구하고 생긴 것이 아니라 힘든 상황으로 인해 이 행운의 상징이 생긴 것이다.

The wasong – a sign of good fortune – was not there because it survived in spite of the harsh weather. Rather, it was born out of those very same harsh circumstances.

 

 

 

여러 상황으로 조금 지쳤던 2020년이지만, 이 와송을 보고 내 마음속에 희망이 다시 느껴졌다.

Though the challenges and difficulties of 2020 often seem overwhelming, seeing this small plant reminded me that there is yet cause to be hopeful.

 

어려움을 겪으면서 새로운 아름다움도 생길 수 있다.

That times of difficulty often bring with them glimpses of new and unexpected beauty. 

 

생명은 생명만의 새로운 길을 찾아내게 된다.

That through it all, life finds a way, 

 

힘든 상황 끝에는 행운의 와송이 나타난다.

and at the ends of the passing difficulties, a small plant of blessing and good fortune will sprout.
