[한영 필사노트] 마크테토 "세심길"

영어공부하다 발견한 마크테토님의 인스타.

이 "세심길"은 마치 수능 영어 영역에 지문으로 나올 것 같은 글이다.

 

 

우리 집 대문을 열면, 한 걸음 한 걸음씩 좁은 통로처럼 생긴 길을 거쳐 집으로 들어간다.

Arriving at my home and opening the wooden gate, one passes through a small, narrow walkay which leads up to the house.

 

한옥 중에서도 특이한 구조다.

It’s an uncommon layout for a traditional Korean home.

 

대부분의 한옥은 대문을 열면 바로 마당으로 들어갈 수 있다.

In most hanoks, the gate would open directly into the courtyard of the house. 

 

이렇게 좁은 통로로 들어오는 구조는 원래 한옥보다 한국의 정원에서 주로 찾을 수 있다.

This narrow entry path, though rare in houses, is typically seed in Korean gardens.

 

 

 

정원에 들어서면 대부분 작은 개울이 나타난다.

Entering a Korean garden, there is often a small flowing stream of water.

 

이를 건너려면 좁은 돌다리를 한 걸음 한 걸음 걸어가면서 들어갈 수 밖에 없다.

And so one must cross a narrow path and a small stone bridge to enter deeper into the garden. 

 

이 다리는 ‘세심다리’ 혹은 ‘세심길’이라고 부른다.

There is a name for this – seshimgil – 

 

세수할 때 세(洗), 심정할 때 심(心). 정원에 들어갈 때 “마음을 씻고 들어가자”는 뜻이다.

“A path for washing the heart.” It means “wash your heart as you enter into this new place.”

 

 

우리 집도 대문을 들어서면 좁은 세심길을 거치게 되어있다.

And so when one opens the wooden gate to my house, there is also a

 

“이 새로운 공간에 들어가면서 마음을 씻고 들어가자.”

“path for washing the heart.” 

 

근심과 걱정거리들을 잠시 밖에 내려놓고, 새로운 마음으로 들어오라고 한다.

Take a moment to rinse your heart as you enter this new space, it says.

 

우리 집을 방문하는 모든 사람들에게 나는 세심길 이야기를 들려준다.

Whenever a guest visits, I always tell them this story of the “path of washing the heart.” 

 

특히 사람들이 마음이 복잡한 요즘.

Especially of late, during these stressful and complicated times –

 

우리들 누구나 근심과 걱정거리를 좀 내려놓고, 마음을 씻고 숨 쉬는 시간이 필요해서다.

we all can use a moment to lay down our worries and cares outside. To rinse our heart, and breathe.
